Tom van Bokhoven Named Captain

Following the injury to current captain, Daniel de Ruiter, the Netherlands are delighted to name Tom van Bokhoven as captain for the 2024 campaign.

Head coach, Dave Hunter commented; “We initially named Daniel de Ruiter as captain, following years of dedication and commitment, he has shown true leadership qualities this year and was a natural fit for the role. Unfortunately, Daniel broke his thumb at training last week, and requires surgery along with weeks of recovery, so it put us in the position of having to find a new captain. This is terrible news for Daniel and wish him well for the recovery, it is great to see that he is still committed to the team and being around the squad for training and matchdays, supporting us in any way possible.

This now opens up the door for another player to step up into a leadership position. Whilst Tom is new to the playing group, he possesses all the qualities we’re looking for in a captain. He has very quickly earned the respect of his teammates and the coaching staff. I have no doubt that Tom will do a fantastic job and we’re very honoured to announce him as the captain for 2023.”

New Captain Tom van Bokhoven, spoke of the pride about becoming captain, “As sad as it is I can’t play along side original captain Daniel due to his broken hand, it gives me the opportunity to take on the roll of captain which for me is a huge honour. Being able to share my knowledge of the game with the squad is something I’m really enjoying. Lots of the boys have played for years whilst some others have only played a few games of the sport, which leaves me impressed by the quality of rugby league here.

“The energy around training is always top notch, and each session has been coming with lots of improvement as the boys from different clubs begin to gel. I have high hopes for the squad to win 5/5 games and by the completion of the tournament I expect this to be the strongest rugby league side which the Dutch has ever had.”
